So lets say you are interested in heavy metal music and you key in "Metallica", they will choose from their list of station a station which is to your liking. And they claim that they do this with a set of algorithm which makes everyone head spin like mad and the result is that you will love their service. And not too shabby as well. One of the flaws in most music recommendation service is that they often lack the surprise factor. Pandora sometimes do give you some very interesting nuggets which you might have never heard of without their recommendation and I honestly love it. They are many obscure and upcoming bands out there, it is nearly impossible to listen to all of them. Pandora is doing us a great service if you think about it.
