What is Page Rank?
Here is a layman's explantion of (Google) Page Rank.
The calculations and the actual process is very complex so I give you a simple explanation. Think of Page Rank like an approval rating for your site. It ranges from 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest). The higher your Page Rank, the more websites on the Internet approves your site. Your site also becomes a "highly respected" source or a HIGH PR Site because you have more nods from other webmasters.

Page Rank is a Google invented system, based on the number of links to your site and the power of the linkage. And so it means that the more links to your site, the higher PR you will get and it also means that a site linking to you with a PR 5 gives you a better approval rate than a site with PR3.

Do understand that PR itself doesnt affect Google Search Engine results (SERPs), but it can more or less gives a good indication.

However, Page Rank will determine which site Google's googlebot (or spider) will very likely crawl on it's next crawl of the web. Thus a site with a high PR will be more likely to be crawled than a site with lower PR, and resulting in more pages being indexed (stored in it's cache, which is a good thing) by google.

Google's publicly shown PR is usually updated every 3/4 months, so if your site is new and doesn't have any PR yet, it's ok. Just wait for a few more months for it to be updated. However, internally in Google, PR is updated regularly.

With that said, it is important to note that PR isnt everything for a webmaster, good, clean SEO can get you even better results. In the end, PR is just a number for webmasters to play with, nothing more.

How to check a site's PR?

There are several ways you can check PR:
1. Download Google's toolbar and install. Works on Windows with Internet Explorer and Firefox. You can see the Page Rank on the toolbar, it's the green color bar.
2. Visit PR Checker and check the site's PR there. Note that the URL with or without the "www" in front can give different PR results.

So how do I increase my site's PR?

There are a few ways you can increase the inbound or incoming links to your site and thus your site's PR:
1. One way is to submit to directories. There are free and paid and low and high PR directories. You need to choose wisely which paid directories to submit to as a lot of paid directories aren't worth it.
2. Write articles and submit to article depositories. Since you usually include your site in the author's section, it will help increase your PR as good article directories usually have high PR.
3. Write good content and let others link to your content. This is probably the best way to increase your PR as these links will be highly sought after by good (and thus high PR) sites. Remember, content is king in ALL search engines.
4. Forum signatures can help increase your PR, especially if you post in forums with high PR.
5. Give freebies, like a piece of well-writen software or a script. This attracts links from other websites. Or even a contest can help, but contest usually ends very fast and the links to your contest site may be fade, a good piece of software can be used for years and sites about that software can pop out, all with links to your site.
6. Start a project, which benefits the community. Give webmasters a reason to link to you.
7. Link exchange with other sites, preferly of higher PR.
8. Write good content and let others link to your content. No seriously.
