Hitchwiki Man, a community of Hitchhikers! I never expected that people with dirty clothing and huge backpacks will form a community. But they did. And this is indeed a good thing. Too many people start hitchhiking without giving any thought to what to bring and what to do. They think that hitchhiking is just a matter of thumbing to get free rides. But to stay safe and to prevent any unneccessary delays or troubles, there are indeed some things to consider. Not too many, but still they are important. This site is maintained by active hitchhikers around the world and they will share with you their experiences in hitchhiking - the best mode of transport in the world, except when you move from one continent to another. For the beginner, check out their basic tips first. They have numemrous articles on safety, where and when, the all important signs to watch out for and so on. Furthermore, they have many articles in different languages. Hey, it is not only Americans who hitchhike you know.

DigiHitch This site is all about hitchhiking. Probably not the safest way to travel around the country but if it gets you to your destination, why not? And if we travel by plane or by train, it can be rather boring. It is actually not the destination, but the actual trip itself and what you see and experience along the way. This site offers you tons of tips and advise on hitchhiking and backpacking - the lodgings, the cheapest mode of transport, what to do when you are lost and so on. It also have stories written by actual travelers where you can learn from their experience. Heck, you can even find a hitchhiking partner on this site through their community portal. Furthermore, if you have plans to hitchhike around the world, DigiHitch provides country specific information and guides. Good luck out there and be safe.

Hitch-Hiking.org Seriously, this site has a bit too much love for hitchhiking or maybe the correct term for it is "thumbing". It is designed for the "supporters" of hitchhiking. I understand that hitchhiking is a rather interesting experience and probably the best way to see the country, but still it can be a bit dangerous. We will never know who we will meet along the way and in whose transport. At least on the Internet, you are safe from physical harm. This site has some very good advise for hitchhikers, one of which is ignore provocations. Very important since we will meet all kinds of people on the roads, provocation usually don't end very well, especially if you are miles away from home. It has a list of what to pack and what "really" to pack. I think this site is a must-read if you are planning for a road-trip, some of the advise are rather practical and can only be learned through experience. As usual, stay safe when on the roads.
