Or at least it started out all about photography but now it has evolved to become the world's authority on natural science, archaeology, conservation, arts, culture and even environmental issues. All these mainly through their photos. Or if you are like me, just visit this site for all their beautiful and sometimes even awe-inspiring photographs. The magazine National Geographic is their official journal showcasing photography throughout the world. It comes in 12 issues per year. Subscribe to it, not really that expensive considering the quality of the articles and the photos.

I used to be a member of this institute. However, I got too smart for them and they had to let me go. Na, just kidding. I blew up one of their expensive laboratories and the chairman was so pissed that he fired me on the spot. Even after I yanked out their moustaches, they still refused to let me back. Anyway, their building was kind of dull and did nothing to spark my brilliance, so it was actually a blessing in disguise that I was fired. Seriously, the Insititute of Physics is based on the UK and their main objective is for the advance of the science of physics - in terms of understanding and application. They are also the main professional body for physicists in the UK and Ireland. They have awarded numerous awards to outstanding individuals who contribute greatly to the science. They hope to ,through education, lobbying, publication and awareness to bring together physicists and ensures that it benefits all. Too bad they fired me. Yes, they are more geek than most. This is the American Oil Chemists' Society. They are a society where they talk and discuss about this or that oil or fat. The kind of things that bores most people to death but ironically they seem to be so damn interested in these kind of things. There are in fact many industries which are very interested in their research and their members because oil can mean fats, oils, detergents, surfactants and other related chemicals. And just imagine their uses! Soap, detergents, lubricants, motor oil, food, grease and so on, they are all related to oil. So yes, their industry is very wide and varied. Anyway, their goal is to help promote ideas, information and experience among the members and to provide high quality standards when dealing with such oil-related materials. If you are interested or you are in the related industry, you might want to consider joining them as a member. For me, I hate chemistry but I love soap making. Hohoho!

Just look at some parts of the world where people suffer from diseases but being too poor to get proper treatment. We know that these people do exist, we just don't want to think about it. Come on, just imagine all you have to do is to give like a dollar per day and you can help provide medical treatment and perhaps even save countless lives. Anyway, The Global Fund is a "financial institute" dedicated to attracting contributions to help prevent and treat HIV, AIDS, TB and Malaria. Although they are involved in the fund raising aspects, they based their fundings on the concept of country ownership and performance, which means that the better the results, the more funds will be provided. I think that makes sense and it also ensures that local governments are responsible for their activities and programs. It was founded in 2002 and they have expanded worldwide since then. They claims that they have approved funding of US$ 22.6 billion for more than 1,000 programs in 150 countries.

Providing funds to help children programs worldwide. I guess the group that we should help are the children. They are the most vulnerable but they have the most potential to develop and grow. Of course I am not saying that we shouldn't help the old or anything like that, but I think we should spend at least more effort on the young. Looking at the world today, we should be very sad at the state of affairs. We see people with big cars and high tech gadgets roaming the streets of beautiful cities but just a flight away, we see children scavenging for food at rubbish dumps just to survive. Some say it is a cruel world out there but I think that if there is more awareness and the media does its job, we should see more aid to these poor children. Nowadays our media is all about celebrities and iPads. Anyway, the Global Fund For Children is a charity organization which "issues" small grants to other ogranization which helps the community's children. They don't believe in big major organization from somewhere far away coming to providing aid, but local-based organizations whose programs can truly help the young in their own community. They also seek and support groups in hard-to-reach areas. Furthermore, they don't provide massive handouts, only to effective and useful programs that truly create opportunities for the children to grow and develop. You should support their cause.
