The Salvation Army No, they are not the army for the country of Salvation. No tanks, no guns, no military uniforms, no marching soldiers. They are not that kind of army. One of the most well-known charity organization in the world. They have branches and offices througout the world and their aim objective is to do good. But as a Christian mission, they have some very weird goals - like stopping pornography, having this "code of conduct for men" thingy and anti-abortion. What they are living in the dark ages still? I know, I know they have some admirable goals in their sights, but when we have people trying to "stop pornography" as one of their main agenda, it just reeks of fundamentalist thinking. Aren't there more important things to do right now? All we have to do is look at the news and we will easily spot diasters, terror, hunger, diseases, injustice, inequality - yet it seems that fundamentalist ideology still reigns in this supposed modern organization. I don't know about you but bringing religion into the mix is always a recipe for disaster. Just look at the Christian fundamentalist in Korea and what they are doing to the country.

Future of Philanthropic This project was dedicated to understanding the whole spectrum of philanthropic giving, rejecting the once-neat distinction between foundations and other giving that is not “organized." Many individual donors are just as strategic—as thoughtful, intentional, and creative—as many small foundations. And there are many new forms of community philanthropy where individuals come together to organize their giving. Though the project was focused on the U.S., some of its findings will be useful and interesting to practitioners in other parts of the world. -

Drinktap It is all about drinking water here. Yes, the stuff which you pour down your throats when you are thristy. No, not coke but the real thrist quencher - tap water. Most people don't realize that it is important to have access to good quality clean water. However due to the fact that it is so easily available in most developed countries that we failed to realize all the hard work needed to get the water to you. And this site is dedicated to ensuring that the process is kept safe for the common good. Without clean water, our society will collapse. Heck, most modern societies will collapse. They bring together all the experts to help serve the community - from the design, construction and even operation of the water facilities to treatment, distribution, management, and conservation of water supplies to the all those laws and bureaucracy. They believe that such things should start young, so they even have a section just for kids. If you like to know more about drinking water, check out their website.

Clean Water Action The importance of clean water cannot be understated. Without access to clean water, most of us will probably not survive for long. And pollution of our water ways is all too common. Nearly every day you will read on the newspapers that someone or some company has been found guilty of dumping some toxic waste into our rivers, canals or even ponds. These polluted water will come back and hurt us when we drink it. Think that it will not happen? Think again, it has already happened. And it will keep on happening until we do something about it. This is certainly for the common good. Clean water is so important to our health, our families and our future, I think it should be the top priority for our government. But apparently they are too busy with something else. It is left to such organizations to help remind them and remind the public. Visit their website to see what they have done and what they have in store for us. If you think that their cause is worth it, you should donate.

Charity Water More often than not, we don't realize the importance of having access of clean water. I remember once there was a flood and the entire region did not have power. Sure we have bottled water but even that would run out pretty fast. Without access to clean water, we could not bath, cook or even quench your thirst. We were without clean water for about a week. Just imagine some of the third world nations, they don't even have a proper municpal water supply. What this organization does is attempt to bring clean drinking water to those countries. Their projects include building hand-dug wells, drilled wells, rehabilitations, spring protections, rainwater catchments and implement BioSand filters in schools, clinics and villages. Check out their website to see which of the countries they have been involved in. Recently they have moved on to Bolivia and Guatemala. They claim that every single dollar that is donated to their cause is used to fund water projects throughout the world. So go ahead and donate if you feel that it will help.

HOPE International Development Agency Based in Canada, this organization seeks to help families throughout the world who have been displaced, jobless or trapped in the poverty cycle that has plagued many developing countries. This way, the "poorest of the poor" can have a better life. They teach, provide or aid families so that they can be self-sustainable and hopefully, they can break out of this poverty cycle. Skills, training, infrastuctures, methodology, loans and so on are part of their programs. I am a big fan of providing the tools to the poor. I am not a big fan of those organization whose sole purpose is to provide food because sadly, this type of charity goes nowhere. In fact, I think it could have negative effect on the people there as they then become to relient on aid agencies. Training, education and even awareness that they could have a better way will achieve better results in the long run. If you can, how about donating to their cause. They depend on the generousity of the richer countries to help these people. Or if you wish, you would join as a volunteer.

Africa Fighting Malaria Come help them fight malaria. One of the biggest problems fighting the poverty striven countries of Africa is Malaria. Probably due to the poor sanitation conditions and the lack of basic healthcare, Malaria has destroyed many lives in these countries. It is spread by the mosquito and can result in fever and in severe cases even death or coma. Although Malaria is prevalent in many countries around the world, most of the deaths happen in Africa. The AFM is a non-profit health advocacy group founded in 2000 and their main aim is to raise the awareness of the disease in order to prevent the spread. Yes, Malaria can be more or less controlled with proper sanitation and education. And they also research and write commentaries on the effects of Malaria and other diseases on these developing countries. Check out their website for more information on their mission. You can also find information on the control, prevention and treatment of the disease.
