Whole Foods Market Are you into the whole organic food craze? Yes? Then you will love Whole Foods Market. They are a chain of grocery supermarkets which deals primary with organic and natural food produce. I think switching away from all those commerical foodstuff which we find in our local supermarkets is good, especially considering how all those processed and pre-packaged foods are produced. Sure, their prices are higher than what you would normally get, but think of the environment effects and the health issues you might face. Furthermore, Whole Foods Market is ranked among the top "most socially responsible" companies in the United States. If they abide by the laws, they are certainly good in my book. Visit their website and check out what they have for sale in their stores. Basically same as most supermarkets, they sell common grocery items like beverages, frozen products, meat & poultry, wine, beer and so on. Just that they sell better quality ones. Remember, nobody will take care of your health, except yourself.

Netgrocer In the age of digital media and broadband, why are we still going out to do our grocery shopping? I mean if you have Internet access, a credit card, a mouse and some fingers, why not do it online. Why are we wasting time rushing to the supermarkets, fighting over parking space, dealing with black faced cashiers and even getting mugged on the way? All of us should do online shopping with Netgrocer - it is fast, easy and downright convenient. Netgrocer is exactly like your neighbourhood megmart, just that they conduct their business online. They even have their "dirt cheap offers" on their front page so that we won't miss them. Furthermore, Netgrocer ships nationwide, thus you can purchase anywhere and get it delivered anywhere. Actually a good idea for those who are bedridden or have trouble walking. That includes drunk students.

Tesco We love shopping, even if it is just shopping for sunday groceries. There is nothing like finding the best bargain in such a huge store. Probably that is why those megamarts and hypermarts are so popular these days. Tesco is one of the world's largest retailer of groceries and household items. They have stores in the United Kingdoms, United States, parts of Europe and Asia. They sell fresh foods, groceries, wine, clothing, consumer electronics, furniture, kitchenware, toys and many more. They are just like Walmart. However it is kind of cool that they have their very own bank called Tesco bank. They deal with credit card applications, loans, savings and insurance. See, who says common household items cannot make money. They are huge enough to become a bank themselves. Anyway, you might think that Tesco is an American company (since they are so big), but they aren't. They are based in the United Kingdoms.

Kroger Yet another hypermarket chain. Seems to me that the world loves supermarkets. Everywhere around the world, small stores are being replaced with all therse big supermarkets which supposedly sells items cheaper than the smaller mom and pop stores. And it is definitely more convenient to do your all your shopping under one roof right? It doesn't matter that everytime one of these supermarket chains appears and the local economy is destroyed, we all want cheap and discounted groceries for sure. They operate over 3,600 stores, which is kind of scary if you think about it. And as with all supermarkets, they sell the usual groceries, health items, frozen foods, baked goods, household items and so on. Nothing real special. They have their own brand of groceries as well. Visit their website to check out the latest offers or coupons they have. Their competitors are Walmart and Cosco. Looks like our entire food and grocery industry is dominated by these big supermarket chains.

SuperValu This is more of a food distribution chain than a supermarket one. Instead of huge herpmarts that seem to dominate the entire area and ruin local economies, SuperValu provides support and distribution to local neighbour grocery stores as well as operate their own brand of grocery store. SuperValu operates over 2,500 grocery stores, 800 over pharmacies, 117 fuel centers and provide distribution to more than 2,000 other independent stores. So if you are looking for a reliable supplier for your grocery store, you should take a good look at what they are offering. In my opinion, I think they are more of an logistic company than anything else. Which is great, since all supermarket chains are actually logistics companies anyhow. Their survival in this competitive industry is very much dependent on whether they can efficiently and effectively distribute their goods across the country. Not an easy task considering that they need to serve over 4000 stores.

Publix Yet another supermaket chain. It is like everywhere you go, you will always be greeted not by friendly stores but by supermarkets chains with their asles and asles of household items. They have become such a integral part of our life that if we don't see any supermarkets nearby, we feel that we are in a foreign country. And Publix supermarkets are the same mold. Like most other supermarket chains, they claim to offer great value because of their distribution, volume due to economies of scale and sheer size. Although they are not as big as some other brands, they are still up there. Their rather cute slogan is "Where shopping is a pleasure". They have over 1000 stores located throughout the country. And now almost all their supermarkets include a pharmacy since we are all very sickly. So while shopping for grocery (where shopping is supposed to be a pleasure by the way), you can buy some sleeping pills for your insomnia. As with most supermarkets, they sell groceries, household items, frozen foods, appliances and so on. Most of their supermarkets have an organic section for the groupies. By the way, Publix is an employee owned corporation.

ASDA A United Kingdom subsidy of Walmart. And since they are related to Walmart, you should know how they treat their employees right? Anyway, it can't be that bad since they are based in the United Kingdom and they don't tolerate employee abuse there, unlike the United States where paying their staff minimum wage is the norm. Their store format is also like Walmarts - big, bare and heavily discounted. They are one of the largest grocery retailer in the United Kingdom and they do have a loyal following, mainly because of their "special offers" which tends to attract the old ladies and bargain hunters. They retail groceries, entertainment products, gifts, kids and children, homeware, health & beauty as well as financial services like insurance. Yes, I find that confusing as well - why would a home product giant be selling insurance? Anyway, they have their own clothes line called George. Don't ask, I don't know either. You can also purchase their items online through their website. Groceries have free delivery.

Delhaize We all love supermarkets don't we? Every Sunday we would flock to the nearest supermarket and return home truckful of groceries, household items, baby diapers and so on. And we can buy absolutely everything there. There is no longer a need for us to go into different shops to purchase stuff anymore. It is just one big single place where you can buy everything you need. God, I love convenience. And apparently so does everyone. Delhaize operates numerous supermarkets across the globe. They have supermarkets in North America, West Europe, Asia and even Eastern Europe. Their supermarkets might not be as popular as Walmarts or the other big American supermarket chains, but they are still petty impressive. The name you guys might know is "Food Lion" supermarkets. Basically they sell the same stuff the other supermarkets sell - groceries, househoold items, baked goods, wine, organic produce and so on. Just like Walmart, but smaller and more neighbourly/homely.
