Facebook Facebook is a social utility that helps people better understand the world around them. Facebook develops technologies that facilitate the spread of information through social networks allowing people to share information online the same way they do in the real world. Facebook is made up of many networks - individual schools, companies or regions - each of which are independent and closed off to non-affiliated users. To join Facebook, people can authenticate into a school or work network, or they can join a regional network. They can then create profiles to connect with friends, share interests, join groups, send messages, write notes and post photos. -

Foursquare Basically a "check-in" service for those who want to know where their friends are. By using their application, users can "check-in" to inform their friends where they are and every "check-in" will be awarded with some sort of points. So the more places you "check-in", the more points you get. And you will become "mayor" if you check in more times than anymore else. Yes, I have no idea why are there people so interested in knowing where their friends have been, nor I see to need to tell everyone where I have been or where I frequent. I mean I frequent the men's toilet very often, do I need to "check-in"? And if I check in too often, will I be crowned the "mayor" of the men's toilet? And if I do, what do I get? A pat on the back from my colleagues and then a pink slip from my boss? Anyway, this is some sort of social-networking fad and it requires your mobile device to be internet enabled in order to get the location.

| Connotea Saving references in Conntoea is quick and easy. You do it by saving a link to a web page for the reference, whether that be the PubMed entry, the publisher's PDF, or even an Amazon product page for a book. Connotea will, wherever possible, recognise the reference and automatically add in the bibliographic information for you.
In Connotea you assign keywords (or 'tags') to your references. These can be anything you like, and you can use as many as you like, so there's no more need to navigate complicated hierarchies of folders and categories. Connotea shows you all the tags you've ever used, so it's easy to get back to a reference once you've saved it. - |

Formspring I am not too sure what to make of this social networking site. It claims to be a place for people to connect to each other by asking them to answer some very original questions. And from there you can read how others respond, some of which is pretty humorous and original. They claim that you can find out a lot about someone from thesr responses. Well, true to a point. Intelligent and witty responses str nice to read and does give some imdication about oneself. And furthermore, users can link to their facebook, twitter and blogger accounts. I doubt it will get big but the idea works just fine.

Diigo This is a social networking site with a slight twist. Instead of just being able to "bookmark" and share websites, Diigo allows users to search tagged sites and even leave "sticky notes" on the site. Certainly more useful than just bookmarking if you ask me. I think social networking sites are useful but it can only be used as an advertising platform and nothing more. But if you have the ability to search information on tagged sites, it would be so much more. Have you ever found a website which contains so very important information, only to find out that you can't remember which part of the site you found the information. Diigo features allow you to search and find the information easily through all your tagged sites. It is like a website manager of your important information. Premium account holders can even search cached copies (cached as in cached in Diigo's database), so you will never lose information again. They have apps for iPad, iPhone and even Android. Pretty nifty if you ask me.

BuzzFeed Don't you wish you were the first to discover something interesting before it becomes viral on the Internet? well, not to worry, now youcan do it easily with BuzzFeed. This is some sort of a platform which can help find Internet content which might go viral. It even comes with a electoral system whereby users can vote whether something will become viral or not. Usually that "something" is a link, video or image. I guess it is the fun factor that most people enjoy. Users can also post content on the site and see what others think of it. Imagine it as those social bookmarking sites but with an emphasis on content which haven't viewed by many people yet. Users will be rewarded with points if they are able to spot such viral content before it happen. They can even "badge" those contents like "cute", WTF" and "LOL". It is just like labels, but only much cooler. And yes, everything is done real-time so you will get the most up-to-date "about to become" viral content right in front of your eyes before everybody.

MyYearbook Finally after so long, we actually have a social networking site just for teenagers. Not! But it is true, this site is mainly focused on social networking for teenagers. It is basically the same as Facebook but with more things just for teenagers. You can create a profile page, send gifts to each other, chat wit your friend and play games. You can even make "lunch money" on the site. And if you make enough lunch money, you can even donate to charity if you wish to. And since it is teenager focused with a huge emphassis on fun, it is huge! Kids love the Internet. And Facebook scares them too much. They have over 15 million visits per week and mostly from the United States. In other countries, probably less popular. I don't know why. The thing I honestly don't understand is how they make money. Yes, from advertisements I know. But how much advertisement can be earned from such sites? Most people tend to ignore online advertisements and some even shut them off completely when surfing the Internet. Is that real money there?

Meetup Surprisingly, this site is not comletely about meeting each other online but rather offline meetups. It acts as an intermediary to faciliate meet ups for groups of people living apart. So you can search and find a group with the same interests as you and join them for coffee or some event. So if you like basketball, just key in basketball and your zip code and you will find various groups with the same interest living nearly. You can then of course join them in whatever event they are doing - to share ideas, change something or even to learn new stuff. You can even find groups in the same location and simply meet for the fun of it. Great way to meet new people if you ask me. They took a simple idea and make it feasible. Of course it is always important to take some precautions when meeing strangers on the Internet. And always meet in a public place, unless you are familiar and comfortable with the rest of the group.

Care2 They are the self proclaimed largest community of people who are into healthy and green living and they care alot about human rights and animal welfare. That is great. Think of it as a social networking site for hippies. But I like the idea. At least, it is not one of the same old social networking site where you login to play games, complain about your boss or your teachers and post some nude picture of yourself. It is indeed something different. This site actual empowers you! I know that green living is not in everyone's agenda right now but healthy living, now that I can understand. Human rights I can understand as well. Animal welfare - well to a certain extent. In my humble opinion, we don't treat our own kind well enough to really care about animal welfare. Yes, it is great that people are taking animal welfare a little more seriously but I just think it is hypocritical when you see so much suffering around the world.
