Serious Eats Seriously, food is serious business. For some, their entire life is evolved around eating. For the rest of us, well...we merely enjoy eating. Serious Eats is all about the stuff we put into our mouths - food. Unlike most other food sites, Serious Eat is actually a community of food bloggers as well as original content. You can browse through their recipes section (my favourite), news, "eating out" advise, photographs and so on. And check out their very active forum as well. Food is a topic most people will enjoy talking, so the forum is bound to be very active. And everytime I visit this site, I feel very hungry. Probably not good if you are planning to lose some weight.

Local Harvest I know that we have farmers' market and places where you can find real fresh produce. But nothing can beat getting your produce straight from the farmers right (except growing them yourself)? You not only help the farmers directly (your money is injected straight back into your local economy), you are actually encouraging and supporting them as well. Check out this website where they have tons of information on such farmers and where you can find them nearby your location. The best food are the ones that is grown closest to you. Find information on organic farms, farmers markets, family farms, local fresh food sources and so on. Anyway, they started in 1998 and they have since expanded to the entire United States. So if you are looking for some fresh produce and do not want that supermarket ones, take a look at their website. You will be surprised to discover that even if you live in the city, there are still many ways to get real nutritious food on your table.

MyRecipes Cooking - one of the most beloved pastime for a lot of people. But of course there are others out there who depend on cooking for their living. There are even people out there who has no other choice but to cook for their families. I am certainly not one of them, but I just love cooking. It is like an art where you turn a chunk of raw meat into something delicious and everyone loves you for it. For the housewife, learning to cook is actually something good (or even important but that would be sexist). Anyway, check out this site - it contains numerous recipes for different types of food. They also provide dinner ideas, so for those who cannot think of something great to make for the hubby or kids, check that out. For those who are extremely busy, take a look at their "quick & easy" section. Those are no fuss cooking for you. You can easily save the recipes or even add one of your own. Oh, if you are feeling adventurous, try out their community forums and discuss with others about this or that food. Yes, those people who do nothing but eat will enjoy that one.

Food Subs Sometimes it can be rather difficult to find a certain ingredient that a recipe calls for. Or sometimes it just isn't available in your district or perhaps it is the wrong time of the year. Or they just sold out the last piece. Things like that can happen. So what can you do about it? Well, find a substitute of course! This site contains tons of information on ingredients and kitchen tools and most importantly they provide substitutes. So if you can't find Asian rice noodles, you can check out which is the closest substitute. This site is very useful to have around if you are unfamiliar with certain ingredients, they give you detailed description and what seasons they are actually available. I spent hours and hours on this site, pouring over the tons of useful information and what I can use for which recipe. Of course you might need to find your own recipe but then there are many other recipe sites out there. Have a look, you will not regret it, especially if you are a home cook and you are living far away from those supermarkets.

Organic Valley One of the largest cooperative of organic farmers in the United States. Yes, you heard me right, organic farmers. No more those antibiotics laden beef, no more toxic laden fruits, no more pesticide laden vegetables. Just pure organic produce you and your family can trust. Anyway, I think they might have gotten a little too big to be trusted till that extend. I can see that the food industry, especially in the United States is controlled by big corporations without much of a soul. Hope that they will be different though. Anyway, they are now a big distributor of organic vegetables, fruits and dairy products. You will spot some of their products in the supermarket shelves as well. Yes, this is good news indeed. At least we are starting to see organic products meant for mass consumption. Their cooperative comprises of about 1643 farmers which is quite impressive if you think about it. Remember although it is catching up, organic foodstuff are still not that popular among the masses. Visit their website to check out what are the products they have.

Pick Your Own The website looks a bit outdated but seriously, what matters is the content. Well, not really but hey, for some people, look does not matter. The authors of this site probably doesn't care much about looks. They are probably too busy picking vegetables and fruits from their gardens or plantations to be bothered with web design. Anyway, this site is all about using your hands. It has a comprehensive listing of pick your own (PYO) farms in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and many other countries. They also have step-by-step guides and tips on how to "make your own" stuff like jam, ice-cream, pickles and so on. If you are a farmer, you can add your farm to their list as well. It is like a hippy online community (complete with the weird hairdo) but without the drugs, the rock and roll and Jimi Hendrix, which is sad.

Spark Recipes We all know that there are tons of recipe sites out there. I mean eating is perhaps one of the biggest pastime for a lot of people, I should know I am one of them. Just look at the restaurants and diners and whatever buger joints out there, they are often packed to the rim with hungry patrons. The problem is that most of such recipe sites do not distinguish between a healthy meal and a unhealthy one. They simply just load their sites with tons of recipes in the hope to get more visitors. That might be great for some, but for those who are looking for something healthy, it might not be a wise site to visit. Try Spark Recipes - they have numerous delicious but healthy recipes and even comes with a "recipe calculator" so that you will know the amount of calorie and fat you are putting into your meals. No more excuses. They claim to have over 8 million readers, so they must be doing something right. You can rate the recipes and even share your very own recipes.

Tarladalal You love Indian food? Of course you do - they are often loaded with spices and taste extremely delicious. I think they are the best food in the world. It is just too bad that cooking Indian food often looks intimidating. I would have never tried making one myself if it was not because I have an Indian neighbour. The smell is so tempting that I could not resist. But then it didn't turn out great. So it was back to canned or jar Indian food for me, unless you count the times I was invited over for dinner. Anyway, this site contains numerous Indian recipes for you to try out. You can brose by cusine like Punjabi, Gujarati, Rajasthani, Maharashtrian or South Indian. Yes, there are different types of Indian food, something which most people didn't realize. You can even post your own recipes to share it with others. They even have a kids corner where you can create delicious food for your kids using Indian ingredients.

Evian Never heard of this brand? Well, which rock have you been living all these time. This is one of the most popular bottled water brands out there. And not only just a bottled water thingy, they have become something like a fashion statement. Everywhere you go, you will spot guys in expensive suits sipping Evian water - that sparkling mineral water in their distinct green bottles. Yes my friends, mineral water or even bottled water is not just for the health conscious anymore, it is about portraying a lifestyle. Evian water is from some fancy place in the Alps, where the water is supposed to be very clean and delicious. I don't know whether that is true or not, because most of the Evian water I drank comes with lemon or something. They also claim that their water is "balanced" and has unique health benefits. But at least we know that Evian water is from some mineral spring source and not just from some municipal water source that has been filtered and with some minerals added to it.

Belgian Fries And you thought that fries are all the same. It isn't. I have tried fries which taste just heavenly and then we have our regular old McDonald's or those fast food fries. Miles apart I tell you. Fries should not be made from starch and they should not have added preservatives or whatever emulsifiers. Made from real potatoes is what fries should be. Yes, only freshly cut, irregularly shaped fries made from potatoes imported from Belgium should be considered Belgian Fries. And they should be thick. I don't know why but it seems that a lot of people like their fries thin, which just ensures that the fries will be cripsy but not fluffy inside. Thick fries will have cripsy skin and a fluffy interior - that is what good fries are. Anyway, if you want to know more about this amazing food, check out this site - it contains tons of information on Belgian Fries. Yes, some people are just too obessed. But hey, good for us eh? You should check out the owner's recipe to make your very own Belgian Fries.
