Alexander's Steakhouse Come on people, we love steak. You have to admit that. Just look at the number of steakhouses we have around us. Meats, just can't beat it. And Alexander's Steakhouse is one of the more popular steakhouses out there. Who do I know? Well, everyone is raving about it - can't be that everyone is wrong right? If you are into fine dining and you love steak, their two restaurants might just be the place for you to bring your date or your wife for that great evening you always wanted. And increasing steakhouses are becoming more recognized as fine dining, even though they put big chunks of meat on the plate. Alexander's Steakhouse incorporates Asian style into those Western meats, so you get....I don't know what. But it should be great. Their menus include wet aged strip steak, slow roasted rib roast, filet mignon, Colorado lamp rack, steelhead trout, tempura shortrib, lone mountain waygu and many more. Again, some comes with an Asian twist. I would certainly like to try their food one day.

Mango Mike's You love exotic foods? How about exotic drinks? Well, not so exotic nowadays since everyone is doing it and it is quite common place nowadays but still loads better than the regular fare we have everyday. I mean how many burgers and subs can we eat until we get so bored with those? Caribbean cuisine is loaded with spices and flavour and they bring you back to the beaches and the bars, so why not? Great for a some exotic fun in the sun. Anyway, Mango Mike's specialize it seafood and fresh fish - different throughout the day - fried calamri, jerk chicken wings, seafood nachos, snow crab leg clusters, Eastport claim chowder, Mango Island salad, seafood creole, cripsy shrimp, blackened rockfish sandwich and many more. They claim that all the fish is sourced locally and brought in daily, which would ensure the quality of their food. And yes, all their salad dressings and sauces are made in-house from scratch.

Bern's Steak House Nothing beats a good steak. That chunk of cow meat, seared to perfection is what most people crave. I know most people would agree with me since steakhouses are very popular, especially among Americans where beef is one of their favourite meats. Of course I am not saying that other meats or even other cusines are not popular, but I think steak has become one of the main food diets in America. Those people living in cow country must be pretty happy about it. Anyway, if you are looking for something more high class than the regular Joe's, then perhaps you should check out Bern's. They combine high class fine dining with great food and beautiful ambient to make your evening unforgettable. They have dry-aged prime and choice beef cuts for your enjoyment. Again, you must understand that expensive cuts of meat will ensure that the tab at the end of the day will be high. But unless you plan to do this everything, it shouldn't be a problem. Do it once in a while for that special occasion.

The Heights DC Honestly I don't really fancy those big name restaurants where you are expected to dress up in order for you to enter the place. In fact, I hate dressing up. Why go through all that trouble and trying to attract attention to yourself, just for some good food. I have to admit there are some very good restaurants out there but overall, I would rather dress casually and eat in comfort. No ambience? Well, sometimes it is a give and take kind of thing. You can't have it both ways. And of course, casual restaurants are usually much cheaper in terms of pricing. This is not to say the food is worse or anything like that. Anyway, The Heights is some sort of a neighborhood restaurant with an attached bar. So if you are nearby you might want to pop in for a quick meal or even just for a drinks with your friends. If the weather is fine, you might want to have your meals outside and look at the world pass you by. That is life isn't it? Check out their opening hours and menu while you are at it.

Grillfish DC A restaurant specialized in seafood. I am actually not a big fan of seafood but there are quite a lot of seafood fans out there. They tell me that seafood is delicious - sweet, tender and often full of flavour. Occasionally I do eat some fish and shrimp but that is about it. I don't really like it. And the seafood I consume are usually deep fried. My friends tell me I should try other styles of seafood, especially those grilled and steamed. Deep frying apparently destroys the flavour and texture of real seafood. So yes, perhaps next time I go for seafood, I should have them cooked in some other style than deep fried. Well, Grillfish is a casual seafood specialty restaurant. They claim all their seafood are fresh and their prices reasonable. That is what I like to hear. Their menus include grilled shrimp scampi, clams in garlic and wine, grilled shrimp satay with spicy peanut sauce, grilled salmon, grilled arctic char, grilled scallops and many more. Yes indeed, they are all about seafood here.

Commissary DC This restaurant sounds a bit too "official" for me. But actually it is not. It is a very causal bar and cafe as well as coffeehouse and smoothie bar. You know what, I love bars, especially those away from hotels and big restaurants. I just don't feel like drinking and having a good time if I need to wear some fancy suit. Feels like I am going to some meeting or something. And just imagine a bar with a smoothie bar attached makes you feel that you are doing something healthy. Of course I am not too sure many people will go for it though. Anyway, they do serve breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner so I am sure their cafe is operating properly. And how abotu desserts? They have it too. Come on, who doesn't want dessert after their meals. Everyone does. Of course it could be yet another reason why we all have such bulging wraistlines right? I guess you can consider a full restaurant, meant for people who want a full meal, a quick drink, just some coffee, enjoy some wines or even have a nice dessert. Well, all I can say is enjoy!

Licks Homeburgers & Ice Cream When you mix burgers and ice cream together, you will get something that will give you a heart attack faster than seeing your daughter come home from school camp with a big belly. But at least it is "homeburgers" rather than the regular ones right? Since they are homeburgers, it would mean that the burgers are made in-house? I have no idea but apparently they have a range of burgers for everyone, even for those vegans. Homeburgers for the regular people, natureburgers for those tree huggers, guk sauce, weightless ribeye steak, gobblers, nature chili, jumbo dog, chicken breast, back bacon bun and many more. You can even build your own with some of the greatest toppings you can find. And their shakes are made from real milk and ice cream. I wonder what the rest of them make their shakes from? And honestly, for a joint with a name that has "ice cream" in it, they sure don't have much of a variety for it. If you are looking for someone to cater for your event or your kid's birthday, they are able to do it as well. Do note that they are Canadian, so you might not be able to find their stores anywhere near you.

Fresh Restaurants Vegetarians should like this. I am an vocal supporter of healthy eating and yes, eating vegetables is part of healthy living. However I don't think a completely vegetarian diet is that healthy so compared to a balanced diet. But then I am not an expert in such matters. We all know the problems of eating too much meat and fried foods and this is a serious problem in many developed countries where unhealthy food is easily available. So having such vegetarian restaurants around is good. What started as just a juice bar turned into a small group of vegetarian restaurants. All their food has not been frozen, hence the name - "Fresh". That is actually what I am looking for when I am talking about healthy eating - it has more to do with the quality of the food we are consuming that anything else. Check out their menu full of fruit smoothies, power shakes, healthy pancakes, range of soups, salads, fries, burgers and desserts. If you are looking at some guiltless indulgence, you should visit their restarants. They have 3 locations. All their food are prepared fresh. If you are in a rush, you might want to check out their pre-made sandwiches and salads. But honestly, nothing beats having your meal prepared fresh right in front of your eyes.

Il Cono Gelateria After their flash introduction, I was like all drooling on my poor keyboard. However, this little cafe is only available for those living in Beverly Hills, so all you New Yorkers can cry tonight. Il Cono claims that their Gelato is authentic Italian ice-cream, but then which Gelateria claims that theirs is not. It is interesting to note that this little cafe is actually very popular among the locals, especially for the Gelato, so they must be doing something right. They have over 100 flavors which are rotated daily. All their gelatos are made daily at the premises to ensure freshness and quality. That would certainly be good. The main reason why I hate store-bought ones is that they tend to have this over-frozen slightly stale quality about them. We all love the freshness of ice-cream when we bite into them (or when we lick them), don't we? They also serve "Baby Yogurt" - a soft serve style Italian frozen yogurt. Please stop making me drool.

DuMont Burger Ahhh....burgers - everyone's favourite food. And I am not kidding you when I say it is everyone's favourite food. They are even popular in the Middle East, where American ideas are mostly frown upon. Although it might just be too difficult to figure out who invented the first burgers, it is a common knowledge that Americans are the ones that made it big and made it popular. Thus the best burgers will come from the United states. DuMont Burger is one of the highly rated burgers and they are one of the icons in New York. Here you can find burgers, sandwiches, salads, buffalo wings, milkshakes, root beer and even doughnuts. They even have started a take-out and catering service just for people who are too busy to have a proper lunch or dinner. And if you are visiting New York City, this is a place to go if you are a foodie like me. You will very unlikely not find any other place that serves better burgers than them.

Slyman's Seriously? Corned beef? Isn't that kind of boring? You can easily get that from a can as well and from my experience, corned beef all taste the same. But that my friends is exactly why Slyman's is so popular. Their corned beef doesn't taste the same and definitely does not taste anything like from a can. And judging from the crowd that comes every lunctime, I guess I am right. They are the self-proclaimed home of the biggest and best corned beef in America. Not only do they serve corned beef sandwiches, they have roast beef, turkey, pastrami, ham, tuna and the regular mix - and they do taste great as well. They also serve burgers, hotdogs and grilled cheese sandwiches - typical American fare that feels just like home (if you are an American that is). If you are visiting Cleveland, this is one of the place you should visit.

Vermont Country Deli I don't want to shock you or anything but this deli makes one of the best tasting pulled pork sandwiches in the country. Yes, I kid you not. It is like someone in the North making the best crab cakes in the world. What is happening to the world nowadays? But honestly that is good news for people living in Vermont. At least they do have some decent food available to them. I know I know, we shouldn't complain - just that it is very surprising thats all. Anyway, this country-styled deli serves sandwiches - barbequed pulled pork, turkey, roast beef and ham with numerous other toppings. And yes, they do have marcaoni & cheese. I mean which decent deli doesn't have marcaoni & cheese? This deli certains looks country styled and homely, which is again why it is so surprising that they make such delicious pulled pork sandwiches. And other than just a deli, they also bring in specialty products like maple syrup, jams & jellies, candies, cheeses, sweets and wines - for those with a more exquisite taste than the rest of us.

Los Primos Mexican Food Yet another fast food chain, selling Mexican food. I don't know about you but real honest Mexican food cannot be made fast. It should be made from the freshest ingredients and made with love and some hard work. All these fast food restaurants seem to be destroying the appeal that Mexican food has for me. I want real authentic Mexican food, not those mass produced crap that comes out from some factory. The good thing is that unlike some big giant fast food chain which shall not be named, Los Primos is a smaller chain, which would probably have better quality control. They claim that their food is "authentic" Mexican fare. Personally I doubt that but hey, we have to give them to benefit of the doubt right? Their menu incudes the MONSTER burritos, MONSTER tacos, MONSTER fries, MONSTER Nachos, MONSTER Quesadilla and other stuff. Of course by monster, they mean huge portions which Americans love the most. We might be eating ourselves to death my friends. It is perhaps time for us to lay off huge portions and start eating reasonably. Oh if you need catering, they should be able to help you kill your family or your co-workers easily.

Jimmy & Drew's Come on, admit it - we all loved Delis. No matter how many fast food joints keep on popping up everyday, we still love our home-cook favourites served in our favourite delis. I don't know why it is so. Perhaps fast food restaurants get boring after a while. And those waiters and waitress at the fast food joints look kind of seedy. Don't know what they do to the food they are serving. And Jimmy & Drew's Delicatessen is one of the more popular ones. They serve the best sandwiches! And if you love home-cooked, you will love everything they serve. Why? Because they do everything in-house. You won't get any better than that. The freshest ingredients, the high quality stuff they put into their sandwiches, their gyros, their hotdogs, their cheese steaks and so on. Oh, if you must try one item - you should try either Drew's Favourite or Jimmy's Favourite. Yes, you will come back for more - just that you probably live far far away. They also deliver and do catering as well.

Cheese N Stuff Deli What a wacky name. Cheese N Stuff - just like for mice and other rodents. Have you ever wondered why mice love cheese? I have no idea. Perhaps it is because cheese is so damn complex and delicious. Anyway, Cheese N Stuff Deli is a deli specializing in sandwiches and subs. Of course nearly every deli in the United States specialize in sandwiches and subs but theirs can be considered one of the better ones. And you do get to create your very own sub in your very own style. Isn't that what we always wanted - to have a sandwich or a sub with the ingredients of your own choosing? Just look at their variety of cheeses. And they do catering as well. So if you need someone to supply you nice sandwiches, or subs or exotic cheeses or imported sausages or desserts or whatever, they are the guys to look for. But as with all these smaller delis, you will need to stay somewhere nearby. Or not, you can always look for Subway right?

Cottons Caribbean Restaurant Are you living in old rainy England. Not much sun there isn't it? I mean England is cold most of the time, rainy most of the time and everywhere you go, you see dark and dready scenery. Won't it be great to escape from England? I know there are great stuff about England - the culture, those big imposing buildings and so on, but sometimes you just need to run away from all that and go to some place where the sun really shines and where everything looks bright and fun. If you can't, why not just go to a Carribean restaurant? The food is miles apart compared to the regular English fare. And that is part and parcel of escapism. You don't have to pay big bucks for a flight, just pop into these themed restaurants. As the name implies, they serve Caribbean fare - fritters, frilled foods, chilli chicken, crispy shredded pork, mixed jerk grilled fish, seafood curry, beef pepper pot, all sorts of grilled vegetables and so on. And everything is presented with style, just like what you see in real Caribbean menus. Oh, check out their bar while you are there. Really brings you back to the Caribbean.

Chef Collin Brown You want class? You got class. You want Caribbean cuisine? You got Caribbean cuisine. You want great food? You got great food. Everything you ever wanted in a restaurant, you got it. Yes, I know Caribbean food isn't exactly what many would expect as fine dining, probably because there are so many shacks out there serving them. But honestly, any food can be meant for fine dining. It is all about the style, the creativitiy, the know-how, the ingredients and the presentation right? After so many chinese take-outs, I never expected Chinese food to be class. Then I went to Hong kong and eaten what I would consider real fine dining. So, come on, rip away the stereotype and enjoy food. Isn't that what living is all about? Anyway, Chef Collin Brown is a fusion between Caribbean food and European style. Most of us will definitely enjoy dining at their restaurant. Check out their butterfly prawns, pan fried chicken, Caribbean red bean soup, Jerk chicken, tender lamb chump, Ackee, deep fried snapper and many more.
