The Institute for Advanced Study (singular) is some sort of place where people think up of important stuff and they act as a center for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry. So smart people can come and discuss things that most of us cannot even comprehend. Their members include the famous Albert Einstein. The requirement is that you have weird hair. I guess one of the draws of such independent institute is that the research done there are never directed and are usually left to the individual. It is perhaps this kind of freedom that attracts some of the most brilliant minds to this institute. They also have several special outreach programs so that the bored professors and researchers can do something at least. Members are often chosen from the most brilliant and outstanding of their lot.

I have no idea what critical thinking is before I came to this site. And after browsing through the site, I still have no idea what it means. My puny brain isn't meant for this kind of higher thinking. If I am not wrong, it is all about questioning everything. If you question things you will be able to get to the root of the problem, instead of accepting everything and not knowing what the hell is going on. And once you get to the root of the problem, you will then be able to find solutions. This kind of thinking is not only for those in school and higher education, but also for people in general. Traditionally, our thinking is based on routine and habits and once we accept that, there will no longer be any kind of questioning involved. But since the world evolves and changes, this will only lead to diaster (if you catch my drift). Hence their mission is to change and encourage critical thinking at all stages of life, even at the ripe old age of 70. Well, I certainly wish that they will succeed. If we all apply critical thinking to our problems, I am pretty sure many of these problems will be solved.

It is all about thinking here. Yes I know that this isn't the favourite of most people (including me) but we all got to think. If not, we would be doing everything blindly and have absolutely no idea why or how we are going to do it. Thinking does require effort and most of us don't like using effort. This site helps us to find ways to "better thinking" and these are divided into systems thinking, creativity, cybernetics, cognition and reflexions. I am not too sure what they all mean but I am betting it will be useful. You see, using your brain is worth it. You will find better results when you use your brain. Trust me, at times when I take the effort to use my brain to solve something, it actually works. I am pleasantly surprised. Read through their website to understand more about these to help improve individual and even organisational thinking. Yup, it works for organizations as well. Who says that thinking is only for individuals? I think that it would definitely have many positive effects on organizations.

It is a site about spatial thinking. As for what it means, I have no idea. Even after reading through their explanation (which is just one sentence or so), I still have no idea what they mean. Perhaps it mean that we should think beyond the direct incident and how it affects the world on the whole. Whatever, just thinking of it makes my head hurt real bad. Anyway, this site is all about promoting spatial thinking. So if you has visited their site and believe that this will work for you, you should start applying their principals. They hope to make use of the spatial thinking principals and put them into schools and curriculum although I think it would be a bit tough, especially considering nobody understand what it means in the first place. This is best left to our intellects and scholars who are paid the big bucks to think of ways to implement such things. We are talking about independent thinking. You might believe that this is a rather common thing in the free world but lets be honest, it is not. Everyone is influenced by somebody and that influencer will be the one doing the thinking. And of course that "influencer" might also be influenced by someone else and so on and so forth. And parents, teachers, govt officials, politicians and so on have influence on us as well. We are just trained from young to believe what people in authority says. This is a fact of life. What this site is trying to do is to help their readers find ways to think independently. I am not saying like a rebel or something, but questioning those things you think is not wrong. This is something called criticial thinking. It helps you to find the root of the problem and once you know that, you can solve it.
