In the beginning, there was Google Books. Well, not exactly. But one can certainly argue that the project is as old as Google itself. In 1996, Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page were graduate computer science students working on a research project supported by the Stanford Digital Library Technologies Project. Their goal was to make digital libraries work, and their big idea was as follows: in a future world in which vast collections of books are digitized, people would use a "web crawler" to index the books' content and analyze the connections between them, determining any given book's relevance and usefulness by tracking the number and quality of citations from other books. -

You can get recommendations from other readers, keep track of what you have read and even play book trivia, if you are really a book geek. What you do is browse through what others are reading (and enjoying),  check out their own reviews and even join in any discussions regarding the books. Not to mention, they have also collected tons of information on books like date of print, author profile and awards the book has gartered. Useful website even for those who are not geeks.

And it is very important for writers as well, whether you are a book author, a copy writer, journalist or even an advertisment executive. I myself have been to this site many times. I would probably be the only one there without a moustache and would be ridiculed. Check out the Phrase Thesaurus - it finds phrase rather than just words. What it actually does is generates a list of phrases and sayings that corresponds to your topic. Extremely useful if you are out of ideas and inspiration for your article. However, the Phrase Thesaurus is not free. It does require an annual fee but I think that it is more than worth it.

I would say, Why not? Books is the most important source of information for everyone way before the Internet was invented. And it still is. The Europeans took over the entire world first and foremost because of books. We can claim that it was guns and big sailing boats and so on, but honestly it was in the end, books that made the most difference.
