Merriam-Webster Never heard of this? Shame on you. It is a dictionary for god's sake! Come on, surely you must have heard of a dictionary right? Even if you are not a native of the English language, you should have heard of a dictionary. But if not, it is okay. I am telling you now - this is the site to go if you need to understand the meaning of a word or a phrase. Or even if you need to find a related word, you can find it here. They have been around for over 150 years, so what they say you should trust. It is not like Wikipedia where everyone can edit and modify stuff, they are a popular source of language information. If you are keen to learn the English language, you should sign up for their newsletter. They have this "Word of the day" newsletter where they will explain a certain word. Very useful for busy people like me who seldom have the time to learn new words. I especially like their "slang" section, pretty interesting and useful for bloggers.

The Free Dictionary Yes, this is definitely a very useful resource for everyone. Even those who native language is English will require some help with some words one time or another. I am sure that even English professors have a dictionary in their desk or somewhere. And words sometimes have two meanings. Oh, that is from Led Zeppelin. Anyway, The Free Dictionary is way cooler than the other online dictionaries we have. Other than the usual key in the word and get the explanation or meaning, they have some additional features. You can easily customized the homepage to suit your uses - eg you can add or remove or even move about content so that it can be easily accessed. They have things like "word of the day", "today in history", "quotation of the day", "spelling bee" and numerous other content. And not only in English, their dictionary supports Spanish, German, French, Italian, Chinese, Portuguese, Geek,Polish, Turkish, Dutch, Russian and Nowegian languages as well.

YourDictionary What is the purpose of dictionaries? Well it is to find explanation for various words right? Yes, we know that sometimes there are complicated words which cannot be explained easily but most of the time, especially for most of us, we don't really need complicated explanations. We don't even need to know complicated words. This is where YourDictionary comes in. It gives easy to understand and straight forward explanations for the words you search. But if you need better understanding, they also index information from other dictonaries so you can get those explanations as well. I admit that their interface is a bit rought at the edges but still quite useful. Who has the time to read through numerous confusing explanations when one or two words should suffice? Go ahead and try it out - you won't regret it, especially if you are a busy person and English is not your native language.

Learner's Dictionary If you are not a native English speaker and would like to learn some English, then you should have a look at this site. It is all about learning the English Language. It offers its users plenty of ways to understand and learn English - from practice exercises, important words to know and day-by-day words to further enhance yourself. And unlike most other dictationary, this dictationary comes with drawings and illustrations, making it much easier for non-native learners. Since English is indeed an International language, why not try to pick up a second language here. There is no longer a need to look for subtitles when watching those American blockbusters.

Visuwords Somewhat a weird site. I believe this is a dictationary and thesaurus designed into such a way that it has a graphical interface. This interface allows you to see which words are related. So all you have to do is to key in a word (or phrase) and you will be presented with drawing and lines showing the relationship between the different words. Although I kind of dislike the chunky interface, it is actually pretty useful for anyone who is into writing. So bloggers, authors even copywriters can make use of this site to give their sentences and meaning a little more zest. Hey, writers like us need all the help we can get when we write. It is not like ideas, words and sentences just pops into our mind whenever we want them. It does require a lot of concentration.

Wordnik It is all about words here. But unlike most "word" sites which simply just show you the meaning of the word, this site does way more than that. They show you how the word is used and where the word can be found on the Internet. This allows you to understand more about the word than just the simple meaning. It is the context, god damn it! Furthermore, it shows related words, making it easy for writers to form sentences. Oh, if you are good with words and would like to contribute, you should sign up. Sometimes when I need some inspiration, I would just visit this site to look for random words. Sometimes words can spark an idea which you would never have though of. And since this site is actually made up of a coummunity, you get to interact with other users by seeing what words they are looking up on and so on. Although the interface was a bit confusing initially, once you get the hang of it, you will appreciate the usefulness of those falling words, random that they may be.
